NEW VOTER IDENTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
The Help American Vote Act (HAVA) requires that voter registration applications include a place for an applicant to provide either a driver's license number or the last four digits of his or her Social Security number. This registration requirement is new to New Jersey. In addition, HAVA provides that anyone who registered to vote by mail after January 1, 2003 and did not vote previously in a federal election in the state, will be allowed to cast a machine vote only after presenting one of the following items to election officers at the polling place: a current, valid photo identification; utility bill; bank statement; government check; paycheck; or a government document with the voter's name and address.
